Recital on Sunday!!
Steven Wedell to perform Faculty Viola Recital at Otterbein University
with Suzanne Newcomb, piano
The Department of Music at Otterbein University will present “Music for Viola” featuring Steven Wedell, as part of the Faculty Recital Series for the 2013-2014 concert season. This concert will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in Riley Auditorium of the Battelle Fine Arts Center, located at 170 W. Park Street in Westerville.
Steven Wedell is currently Senior Lecturer of Applied Viola at Otterbein. Mr. Wedell is a full-time violist with the Columbus Symphony and a founding member of QUBE, Otterbein’s Artist-in-Residence String Quartet. Joining Mr. Wedell for the recital will be Dr. Suzanne Newcomb, currently a member of Otterbein’s piano faculty. Scott Wedell, a Columbus percussionist and studio teacher, will also perform on the recital.
The program will feature music from a wide spectrum of the viola repertoire. Lachrymae was written by English composer Benjamin Britten – based on music by John Dowland, this work is both nostalgic and forward looking. American composer Michael Colgrass wrote Variations for Viola and Four Drums for his own performances as a professional percussionist. Written in 1957, this combination of instruments, though unusual, creates a very current sound. The recital will conclude with a performance of the Sonata in B-flat for Viola and Piano by Belgian composer Henri Vieuxtemps. This is a late Romantic style piece written by the famed violin virtuoso for his own concert tours.

Holly participated in the 2013 Cooper Piano festival at Oberlin. Here she is performing the first movement of Haydn’s “big” E-flat Sonata. A memorable performance!
